Soundbox Fellowship Program for Composers

The Soundbox Fellowship Program for Composers — July 22–27, 2026 is a week-long residency in Sarasota that focuses on the workshopping of newly completed works and already-premiered works for a “second performance” recording.

In keeping with SFP’s mission, the July program asks composers not only to hone their craft, but also to consider how the canon of musical works is shaped through extra-musical factors, such as economic feasibility, potential for second performances, and space for interpretation. The program also begins a series of conversations about the nature of arrangements and their function in the musical repertoire.

Collective Voices

Collective Voices: A Recital of Music for Violin and Piano
Collective Voices brings together four newly commissioned works for violin and piano, centered on themes of migration and belonging. Created by violinist Dr. Sophia Szokolay and supported by a grant from the New England Conservatory, the project amplifies the perspectives of composers whose voices are shaped by diasporic experience and intergenerational memory. Composers Sam Wu, Marc Migó, Sid Richardson and Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol reflect on what it means to build and carry “home,” resulting in a program that is both intimate and culturally relevant.

All ticket sales and donations directly support the recording and production of these newly commissioned works, which will be recorded this June and released as Sophia’s debut album this fall.

Reinvention: Channeling Change into Creativity

When a great artist begins a new chapter in their creative life, it is as if they are reinventing the future. Not just theirs, but ours.

Many artists have experienced new beginnings: Franz Joseph Haydn ended his long tenure in Esterhazy (northern Hungary) and started a new life in London; The Who’s Pete Townshend’s creative frustration and religious awakening changed the course of rock music with Tommy. Unrequited love spurred Leoš Janáček to his peak of originality; and Edward Elgar returned to composition after the First World War.

Gustav Mahler started over several times as a conductor, a composer, and a man. He began anew with his Fifth Symphony. Later, after his long tenure at the Vienna State Opera, he sought out new musical and professional challenges in New York prior to composing the Ninth Symphony, the focal point of this year's festival.

MahlerFest 39 explores how a new beginning stemming from frustration, pain, or turmoil can shape an artist’s work.

Soundbox Fellowship Program

The Suncoast Composer Fellowship Program brings together a community of performers and composers who interact with the Sarasota community and bring the enthusiasm of our music-making to all corners of the globe. At the same time, the program addresses certain urgent questions that face music-making in the 21st century. For example, how can we introduce and lift the voices of wonderful composers today to more communities around the world? After new music is premiered, they often collect dust on the shelves. How do we bring these works into our music-making today? What tools do we need to become advocates for music of our times?

The Portland String Quartet presents: Point of Departure

Feb 22, 2026, 2:00 PM

Brattleboro Music Center, 72 Blanche Moyse Wy, Brattleboro, VT 05301, USA

About the event

This program explores moments when composers stepped beyond the familiar to chart new artistic territory. Anton Webern’s Langsamer Satz reveals a lyrical, late-Romantic voice rarely associated with his later atonal work. Ken Benshoof’s Sweeter Than Wine blends classical form with American folk and jazz, creating music that feels both intimate and fresh. Eleanor Alberga’s String Quartet No. 2 bursts with rhythmic drive and bold contrasts, drawing on African-Caribbean roots. Prokofiev’s String Quartet No. 2, written during wartime exile, transforms folk melodies into something strikingly original.

Each piece reflects a turning point - a departure from the expected - inviting listeners to experience the spirit of creative risk and reinvention.

The Portland String Quartet explores the string quartet as a space for creativity, transformation, and possibility. It begins with Strum by Jessie Montgomery, a vibrant and celebratory piece that draws on American folk traditions, layering rhythmic textures and sparkling harmonies to evoke movement, improvisation, and joy. Fanny Mendelssohn’s lyrical and expressive String Quartet in E-flat major follows as an innovative portrait of a composer long overshadowed, now reimagined in full light.

Rounding out the program is Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 No. 1, the first of the groundbreaking "Razumovsky" quartets. Bold, expansive, and revolutionary in scope, this work redefined the possibilities of the string quartet, embodying the spirit of artistic daring that continues to inspire musicians and listeners alike.
